Blessing of the Animals
Anticipate the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi by bringing your pets to church for a special blessing! Blessing begins at 6pm, outside in front of the church. All animals welcome, but please make sure they are leashed or in a crate/carrier. No RSVP needed, just show up with your animal!
Please note: We are doing the pet blessing on October 3rd this year so that we do not to conflict with the Vigil Mass on October 4th which is St. Francis’ feast day!
Why do we bless animals on St. Francis’ day?
One story tells us Francis was traveling through the Spoleto Valley in Italy when he came upon a great flock of birds. Swept up in the moment, Francis left his traveling companions, ran towards the birds, and began to preach the Gospel to them:
“My brother and sister birds, you should praise your Creator and always love Him. He gave you feathers for clothes, wings to fly, and all other things that you need. It is God who made you noble among all creatures, making your home in thin, pure air. Without sowing or reaping, you receive God’s guidance and protection.”
The story goes that the birds began to praise God, and ever since Francis made a habit to preaching to the animals, especially when people wouldn’t listen! All of creation shows us the wonder, beauty, and goodness of God.
